TCC Builds Careers in Law Enforcement

A man standing in front of a lakeBorn and raised in Tallahassee, Logan Lane enrolled at TCC fresh out of high school, though he wasn’t clear or enthusiastic about his path in the beginning.

Once he began taking elective courses in criminology, Lane discovered he had a budding passion. After attending ride-alongs with the local sheriff’s office, he decided to major in criminology and graduated with his A.A. degree, enrolling at the Pat Thomas Law Enforcement Academy shortly after.

“Once I got focused on a direction, school became a priority,” said Lane. “I was 100% invested in it.”

After graduating from the Academy, Lane’s career kicked off. He worked for the Tallahassee Police Department as a reserve officer for over 20 years; he also spent eight years on the K-9 Unit and 16 years serving on the Tactical Apprehension and Control Team (TAC). He later retired, going on to start several businesses locally.

“The most gratifying thing [about this career] would have been catching the bad guys, being on K-9 and TAC, but there are simpler things like helping a lady who’s living alone during a hurricane,” said Lane.

Retirement wasn’t enough to pull Lane completely away from law enforcement. After some encouragement from a mentor at the Academy, Lane sold his business and started as an adjunct instructor.

“[Teaching] allows me to stay connected with what I’ve known for 25 years,” said Lane. “Being able to pass on the knowledge and the experience I’ve learned that you can’t get from a textbook, I feel like recruits appreciate that and it will also set them up to be more successful in their early days of law enforcement.”

Lane especially enjoys seeing recruits flourish and excel in their careers.

“We tell recruits right off the bat that they’re here for a reason. The majority of the time they go on to flourish and go into a career field,” said Lane. “We’ll see them five years later and they’ll be in investigations, on a TAC team, K-9 or a specialty unit, so it’s always good to see that.”
